CITY FESTIVAL “ŠIAULIAI DAYS“

City festival "Šiauliai Days" is one of the most important festivals in Šiauliai. It encourages educational, cultural, recreational activities and cooperation between city‘s cultural and educational organizations. During "Šiauliai Days" the citizens are welcome to shop in the festival fair, enjoy exceptional concerts, creative and educational activities and other entertainment. The festival offers a programme for all age groups and allows to enrich the leisure time of every cultural user.

ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS TIME EVENTS

Starting the beginning of December, begins the marathon of Christmas and New Year events in Šiauliai. From the first December days till the Three Kings Day on the 6th of January, Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies, Advent evenings, exhibitions, concerts, various workshops and educational programmes for children and adults are held.

COMMERATIONS OF SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL EVENTS
Šiauliai Culture Centre organizes various events of public holiday celebrations, which mark significant national historical facts. These celebrations bring people of Šiauliai to mass gatherings, commemorations, marches and concerts.
 
FREEDOM DEFENDERS’ DAY
On January 13 various events are being held in Šiauliai in order to honour the victims of the Soviet aggression in 1991. On this day Šiauliai Culture Centre organizes commemorations, a flag hoisting ceremony, memorial bonfires and a concert.
 
RESTORATION OF THE STATE DAY
On February 16th Šiauliai residents celebrate Restoration of the State Day by going to the Mass, traditional flag hoisting ceremony and festive concert.
 
RESTORATION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY
On March 11 Lithuanians celebrate Restoration of Independence Day. This day is celebrated with St. Mass, solemn commemoration and exceptional march in which, dressed in national symbolism, march political prisoners, exiles, representatives of national communities, members of Šiauliai City Council, military, representatives of educational institutions and other citizens of Šiauliai. The march usually ends with spectacular concert in which Šiauliai citizens celebrate freedom.
 
STATEHOOD (THE CORONATION OF KING MINDAUGAS) DAY
Lithuania is commemorating Statehood Day on July 6, also marking the coronation of the nation's only king, Mindaugas. Festive events usually start with a solemn flag hoisting ceremony, then various performances of art groups, theatrical performances, plays, competitions and concerts carry on.
 
DAY OF MOURNING AND HOPE
The painful events of June 14 are remembered on the Day of Mourning and Hope. On this day concerts and remembrance campaigns are organized to commemorate and honor the memory of the dead.
 
BALTIC WAY AND FREEDOM DAY
On Baltic Way and Freedom Days events that promote patriotism are organized by Šiauliai Culture Centre. Šiauliai citizens gather for remembrance evenings, marches, concerts and various other events.
ETHNIC CELEBRATIONS
In order to preserve and promote the ethnic culture in Šiauliai, Šauliai Culture Centre organizes various traditional Lithuanian festivities.
 
SAINT JOHN'S DAY
Saint John's Day or Midsummer Day, also known as Rasos (Dew Holiday), Joninės, Kupolė and Saint Jonas Festival, is a midsummer folk festival celebrated all around Lithuania. During this magical night, which is also the shortest night of the year, rituals and traditions are important. Attendees of the celebration are introduced to customs by doing various activities: engaging in games and competitions, practicing traditional rituals, admiring a fire show and, of course, traditional bonfire.
 
SHROVETIDE
As the end of the winter is little by little approaching, Lithuanians celebrate Shrovetide, a traditional Lithuanian celebration intended to shoo away the winter. A major element of the holiday meant to symbolize the defeat of winter, is a staged battle between Lašininis ("porky man") symbolising winter and Kanapinis ("hempen man") symbolising spring. The highlights of the festivities include various joyful and frightening characters appearing in costumes, the burning of Morė figure and the tasting of traditional Lithuanian food, especially pancakes. The event is full of traditional folk humour and playfulness.
 
CHILDREN’S EASTER
Children’s Easter, which ir the first Sunday after Easter, is making its way quickly in Šiauliai. The focus of the celebration is children, who during the day participate in various games and competitions, paint and roll Easter eggs, interact with Easter Granny and listen to a concert. The traditional festival encourages the little ones to take an interest in ethnographic holidays.
FESTIVALS, COMPETITIONS AND OTHER CELEBRATIONS
Šiauliai Culture Centre – the main organizator of Šiauliai city events – is inseparable from various competitions, celebrations and festivals well known to the citizens.
 
INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL-COMPETITION "AUŠRINĖ ŽVAIGŽDĖ"
The international dance festival-competition "Aušrinė žvaigždė" focuses on fostering the art of dance, its dissemination and international cultural exchange. The festival attracts hundreds of young dancers every year, not only from all over Lithuania, but also from abroad. Traditionally Moldovian, Latvian, Ukrainian, Russian, Belorusian, Estonian and participants from other countries take part in the festival-competition and perform national, stylized, classical and contemporary dances. During the festival, which usually takes place for four days, Šiauliai citizens have the opportunity to observe the competition and concert programs of the festival participants as well as to participate in various games and other entertainment. Excursions and folk parties are organized in order to familiarize foreign art groups with Šiauliai region.
 
AMATEUR ART FESTIVAL "RUDENS MOZAIKA"
Šiauliai city and county amateur art groups and performers festival "Rudens mozaika" has been organized since 2001. The festival promotes the activities of amateur art groups, communication and cooperation between city and county art groups, creation of joint projects and discovery of new talents. The program of the festival is organized according to genres (folklore, contemporary dance, choirs, vocal ensembles, etc.). Every year the best art group or performer wins "Discovery of the year" nomination.
 
NATIONAL FOLK ENSEMBLES FESTIVAL-CONTEST "RĖKYVOS BANGOS"
National folk ensembles festival-contest "Waves of Rėkyva" brings together folk music fans and performers. Ensembles compete for the best song about Lithuania and funniest polka nominations and winning the love of the audience. Traditional ensembles competitions have attracted not only a large number of participants but also fans.


NATIONAL STUDENT FOLKLORE DANCE COMPETITION "PATREPSYNĖ"
"Patrepsynė", a national folk dance competition for children, aims to promote Lithuanian folklore dance, expression of children and young people and cultural communication in their spare time. An attractive form of competition for young people and the goals of the project are attracting more and more dancers and their leaders. Dances are divided into Beginner, Advanced and Experienced categories. The competition evaluation criteria are not limited to the dance technique or ethnicity - each dancer's mood, empathy and individual interpretation are important. The project is included in the list of priority events of the country for 2018-2020 by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture.

VOCAL ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL-COMPETITION "PAVASARIO MELODIJOS"
Vocal ensemble festival-competition "Pavasario melodijos" is aimed at promoting vocal genre and the works of Lithuanian composers, demonstrating the activities of amateur vocal ensembles, encouraging them to improve, bringing together people of common interest and cooperating by exchanging good experiences. The traditional festival-contest invites art groups not only to showcase the great technique of performing the competition pieces, but also to reveal character, creativity, the uniqueness and culture of the art groups.

AMATEUR THEATRE FESTIVAL "PULSAS"
Amateur theatre festival "Pulsas" brings together theater lovers. Attracting viewers through shows of various genres, it promotes theatrical community and friendship.

WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY
Šiauliai Culture Centre commemorates White Cane Safety Day by organizing an event which celebrate the achievements and strength of people who are blind or visually impaired.

WATER FESTIVAL
Water Festival near the Lake Rėkyva is one of the most attractive summer events for families on vacation. Every year holidaymakers are attracted to water activities, active recreation, concerts, family picnics, creative workshops, games and other fun activities. Over the years the celebration has evolved, its program has been constantly refined and enriched with various activities. Although the title of the event is Water Festival, the focus is not only on water attractions, but also on the time spent with the family. The aim of the festival is to enrich the leisure time of the families and encourage them to spend time together.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
Every year Šiauliai Culture Centre organizes event, dedicated to the International Day of People with Disabilities. During this event people with disabilities gather together – they dance, sing and show their other talents and abilities, socialise, exchange information and simply enjoy their time. The event is enriched by the exhibition of art works of disabled people. The event, which attracts disabled people from different corners of Lithuania, aims to improve the integration of disabled people into society and reduce social exclusion.
