The annual festival-competition "Morning Star" has been fostering the art of dance in Šiauliai for many years. The organizer of the event - the choreography studio "Aušrelė" - one of the oldest collectives of the Šiauliai Cultural Center, founded in 1962, annually prepares a special event program that attracts many lovers and nurturers of the art of dance. This year is no exception. Organized for the seventeenth time, the festival-competition on May 14-19 will bring together almost one and a half thousand participants not only from Lithuania, but also from foreign countries.

The coordinator and implementer of the artistic part of the festival, Mindaugas Kosaitis, art director of the Šiauliai Cultural Center's choreography studio "Aušrelė", remembers the first event, when only the festival part was being held, which at that time brought together several neighboring countries for three concerts. Today, the festival is growing - the artistic director claims that it is probably the only full-fledged dance festival-competition in Lithuania, which includes both competition and celebration. The artistic director is convinced that the event promotes the development of dance art, educates the younger generation and nurtures dance traditions.

"A person gains a lot of knowledge by dancing. When dancing, the brain is especially active, because at the same time you have to think how and when to perform a certain movement, hit the rhythm, orient yourself in space, move around the stage, look over your shoulder and at the team member dancing next to you. What in school is divided into separate lessons, in dance everything is combined into one: while dancing you learn mathematics and music, you get to know anatomy, geography and literature", says M. Kosaitis.

Competition performances are almost the most significant part of the international festival-competition "Morning Star". Traditionally, three competitive parts are held - folk, classical and contemporary dance. All contestants are divided into different age groups, consisting of ensembles, duets or soloists of various sizes. A competent commission will evaluate the performance, which will last no longer than four minutes, according to the appropriateness of the repertoire for the age group, as well as the technical and aesthetic aspects of the performance of the piece. The organizers emphasize that all competitive parts of the international dance festival-competition "Morning Star" will take place in Šiauliai Culture Center.

"The dancers of the choreography studio "Aušrelė" do not compete in the competition, but they will give dance performances as gifts during the festival. We have followed this procedure since the first competitions", says Vita Adomėnaitė-Butnorienė, the implementer of the festival's activities, one of the members of the competition commission, art director of the choreography studio "Aušrelė" of the Šiauliai Cultural Center.

Zita Mundinienė, the author, coordinator and implementer of the festival idea, cultural activity manager of the choreography studio "Aušrelė" of the Šiauliai Cultural Center, is happy with the activity of the participants. "It will be possible to appear in the competition not only live - it has been possible to participate remotely for 4 years now. Contestants from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine will test their success in the contests held at the Šiauliai Cultural Center. Dancers from Poland, Denmark, the United States of America, Georgia and Italy will demonstrate their talent at a distance," says Z. Mundinienė.

May 17 at 5 p.m. The opening of the 17th international dance festival-competition "Morning Star" will take place in P. Višinskis Square. In the program: festive concert, awards for the winners of the first part of the competition. Immediately after the event at 7 p.m. the organizers will encourage you not to disperse, but to have fun and end the evening cheerfully with folk dances "Shoka visi" with the children's and youth folklore ensemble of the Šiauliai School of Music "Vieversėlis" (conductor A. Stankus).

May 18 at 5 p.m. On P. Višinskis Square, guests from the Czech Republic will present a concert program - folklore ensemble "Ondraš" (director Lt. Col. Mgr. Aleš Krkoška). Art collective "Ondraš" is the only professional folklore ensemble of the Ministry of National Defense of the Czech Republic. The group celebrating its 70th anniversary of creative activity will introduce the audience to the music and dance traditions and customs of different regions of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Transcarpathia during the performance.

After the historical and traditional dance performances, the audience will be treated to a burst of contemporary dance. at 7 p.m. in the evening, the dance performance "I would like to be a fern flower" will be crowned by the dancers of the Kaunas Dance Theater "Aura". This performance inspired by nature is about trees, or about people who vitally need each other to communicate, breathe, function, survive and tirelessly search for their fern flower.

On the last day of the festival-competition, May 19, at 10 a.m. The Šiauliai Cultural Center will host part III of the 17th international dance festival-competition "Aušrinė žvaigdė" - classical dance. The program will include the closing concert of the festival and awards for the winners.

The organizers of the event reveal that it will be possible to enjoy the festival-competition not only in Šiauliai. May 14 for the first time, the concert "Dance connects us" will be held in Alsėdžiai (Plungė district), which will be attended by dancers from the Stanislaus Narutavičiaus Gymnasium in Alsėdžiai, the children's folk dance ensemble "Barvinok" (Ukraine), the exemplary choreographic collective "Zadorinka" (Ukraine) and, of course, Šiauliai Culture center's choreography studio "Aušrelė".
