On March 26, 2025, the Šiauliai Cultural Center's Orange Hall hosted the Šiauliai City and District Selection Round of the Lithuanian Schoolchildren's Folk Dance Competition "Patrepsynė". This year, 27 couples participated in the competition - 23 from Šiauliai City and 4 from Šiauliai District. In the second stage of the competition, after a tough fight, 13 couples were delegated to the finals, who will dance with the best patrepsyki and patrepsytsītes from all over Lithuania on May 10 at the Šiauliai Cultural Center.
Organizer - Šiauliai Cultural Center. Financed by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and Šiauliai City Municipality.

Children and youth began the local round of the Lithuanian school folk dance competition “Patrepsynė” by dancing the mandatory non-competitive dance – “Trumpakojis”. This energetic and playful dance not only allowed them to relax and get to know the other contestants better, but also became a great start to the competition, helping to create a friendly, festive mood that involved both participants and spectators.

On Wednesday, 27 couples of folk dance lovers, who came from the city of Šiauliai and the district, energetically danced in the qualifying round held at the Šiauliai Cultural Center. The charm of folk dance was revealed to the audience and the jury by participants from the Šiauliai Gegužiai Progymnasium Folk Club “Čiutulis” (teacher Rima Šereivienė), Šiauliai Jesuit School Folklore Group “Jurgutis” (teacher Ramutė Vedeckienė), Šiauliai “Juventa” Progymnasium Folklore Club “Kleketukai” (teacher Eglė Baranauskienė), Šiauliai Saulius Sondeckis Art Gymnasium (teacher Jolanta Butenienė) and Šiauliai “Juventa” Progymnasium 4c class dancers (teacher Asta Jakumienė). In the qualifying round, the pace and unexaggerated expressiveness on the dance floor were provided by guest couples from Šiauliai district Kuršėnai Stasys Anglickis Progymnasium (teacher Vaida Vielavičienė) and Šiauliai district Kuršėnai Paventiai School-Multifunctional Center Raudėnai Division (teacher Alma Steponavičienė).

In the competition held at the Šiauliai Cultural Centre, children and youth were assessed by a competent commission, which, taking into account dance technique, musicality, expressiveness, naturalness and originality, delegated couples to the final. This year, the Šiauliai city and district selection round was attended by Džiuljeta Ragauskienė, a teacher of the Radviliškis district Šiaulėnai Marcelinas Šikšnis Gymnasium dance collective “Dūkymėlis”, the artistic director of the Šiauliai Cultural Centre choreography studio “Aušrelė”, the ballet master of the Lithuanian Song Festival Mindaugas Kosaitis and the deputy director of the Šiauliai district municipality cultural centre Rolanda Bitienė.

In the selection round of the Lithuanian schoolchildren’s folk dance competition “Patrepsynė”, all couples chose dances from the beginner group – “Dirižablis” (Aukštaitija), “Polka biedna” (Dzūkija), “Letukas” (Mažoji Lietuva) and “Giružė” (Aukštaitija). The best performers were 4 couples from Šiauliai district and 9 couples from Šiauliai city.

Music plays an important role in folk dance competitions – it gives vitality and rhythm to the dances. This year, the participants were accompanied by the instrumental group of the Šiauliai Song Music School Children and Youth Folklore Ensemble “Vieversėlis” (conductor Arūnas Stankus), whose musical sound not only complemented the dances, but also revealed the true spirit of Lithuanian folk music.

The organizers of the event draw attention to the fact that for the final round of the Lithuanian School Folk Dance Competition “Patrepsynė”, which will be held on May 10 at the Šiauliai Cultural Center, applications for the participant of the delegated pair of dancers can be submitted until April 4.
